The CCNA Salary

What to Expect

To obtain a high CCNA salary one must first become certified and then gain some experience. A CCNA certification demonstrates the holder’s competence as a network professional. It validates one’s ability to install, operate, configure, and troubleshoot routed and switched networks. It is also one of the most popular career credentials offered by Cisco, and the most internationally recognized mark of a competent network technician. Earning one of these coveted certifications is the first step on the path to an extremely rewarding career, both intellectually and financially.

The average salary for a CCNA technician is approximately $75,000 per year, but there are many variables that can cause that number to rise or fall. They include geographical location, the industry in which you are working, the amount of time you have spent in a specific career, and much more. Learning these variations can help you to make an informed decision regarding your future.

As with most jobs, the greater your seniority in the field, the higher your salary will be. The first year after certification, graduates can expect to make approximately $43,000 per year. After 5 years in a stable environment, the salary will be raised to nearly $65,000. This number continues to rise steadily for years, and the maximum salary usually maxes out around $90,000 per year.

The reason for this steady increase in salary has less to do with the seniority of the job, and more to do with the continuing education. Because of the changes that occur in the technology industry, CCNA certificates expire every three years. A successful network professional will have no problem retaking the test to renew their certificate, but they do increase their respectability as their employers’ notice that they are not slipping in their field.

Geographic location

Another crucial aspect to consider is the location of the job. According to job surveys taken in 2010, New York is the prime location for those with a CCNA certification. The  salary in the New York area can be as high as $120,000. This is dues to the massive amount of growth and technology in the area. Second to New York is Chicago where the  salary can be as high as $105,000. Other successful cities for  networkers are Atlanta, GA, Houston, TX, and Dallas, TX. On average, larger cities have more opportunities and greater pay rates.

Education and Training

What school the student attends in order to obtain their certification can also affect their income. The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is known for offering a top-notch education and training program. Regardless of location, graduates in the workforce earn between $84,000 and $124,000 after 10 years. However, for some students, it is not possible to relocate to Maryland if they are not originally from the area. Thankfully, many online schools offer CCNA programs that are extremely credible. The University of Phoenix has an online program that students can adjust to their needs and current schedule so that they can easily continue to work while they earn their certification. The average  salary received by students from the University of Phoenix earn between $60,000 and $110,000 after ten years.

Those who have the skills to earn their  certification can become extremely successful whether they live in a large city or a small town. A CCNA certification is something that has the potential to take your career down an extremely successful path along with the rewards of a high CCNA salary.

Cloud Security

Feds Changing Rules for Cloud Security

According to reports issued in the first part of December (2011), cloud providers for the federal government will have until June to comply with a new set of rules governing cloud services and IT security they provide to federal agencies. The rules are good news for cloud providers, despite the fact that we typically think of government regulation as a bad thing. The rules are designed to streamline security certifications in order to allow multiple government agencies access to similar vendors without having to re-certify everyone individually.

If we understand the language of the regulations correctly, this plays out to the advantage of both the providers and the federal agencies themselves. The rules replace the current antiquated system which requires each federal agency to set its own standards which it then passes on to cloud suppliers in the form of necessary IT security certifications. Current cloud suppliers must interact separately with each agency and meet that agency’s individual security requirements.

The system has led to an often confusing set of guidelines that are made that much worse when cloud providers serve multiple agencies. Oftentimes providers aren’t sure exactly what security requirements apply, forcing them to spend money and resources on certifications that might be overlapping. Such overlapping has long been a problem for vendors of the federal government. Hopefully the changes in cloud services will start the stage for helping solve this problem across the board.

Multiple Agencies, One Certification

The new program is slowly being implemented and, as such, no cloud providers have yet been certified. But once fully implemented a provider will be able to meet the federal standards, known as FedRAMP, and then be eligible to provide cloud services to any number of federal agencies. This streamlined system will enable companies to dedicate specific individuals for government contracts; those individuals will receive the special security certifications they need to handle such contracts.

When a company meets the requirements of FedRAMP it becomes that company’s responsibility to make sure its workers are properly certified in security protocol. But because FedRAMP standardizes security among federal agencies, there’s no need to train and re-train individual workers to perform services for multiple agencies. For once it seems the federal government has made a decision that actually streamlines things and cuts costs.

The Necessity of Streamlining

Remarking on the reasons for the new rules, federal Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel said. “Cloud computing has become an integral part of the government’s DNA. One of the main challenges that people have identified is around security and using security as a barrier to entry around cloud computing.”

Mr. VanRoekel’s comments seem to indicate that a lack of security standards is preventing many vendors from offering cloud services to federal agencies. This is obviously not good for business, as it limits the number of bids that come in on any given job. It also prevents federal agencies from finding the best candidates for a particular service if some of those candidates are not bidding simply because they’re confused about security issues. By streamlining and standardizing, the feds hope to increase the pool of service providers and drive down the cost.

The entire program is part of cost-cutting measures designed to slice more than $5 billion from the government’s $80 billion IT budget. At just over 6%, that’s quite a hefty savings that can be achieved simply by standardizing vendor requirements. If the federal government succeeds in its goals, perhaps they can apply this method to other areas of our bloated bureaucracy and save a whole lot more money. Leave it to IT professionals to lead the way!

Repair Tech Certification

It goes without saying that specific certifications are necessary for specific fields within the IT industry. But the world of IT has become so broad in scope that it becomes difficult to decide what qualifies under the IT banner. A case in point is that of the computer repair technician. Is that individual an IT professional or is he more just a hardware and operating system specialist? Furthermore, is it necessary for repair technicians to have specific certifications in order to be successful? Continue reading
